Some treks are about reaching a summit. The Panch Kedar Trek is about the walk between shrines: rhododendron forests, high meadows, quiet villages, and at the end of each trail, an ancient stone temple of Lord Shiva.
If you are planning the Panch Kedar Yatra and don’t know where to begin, this guide covers the route, difficulty, best time, a sample itinerary and the practical details.
What Is the Panch Kedar?
Panch Kedar means “five Kedars”, five Shiva temples in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand. According to the legend, the Pandavas sought Shiva’s forgiveness after the Mahabharata war. Shiva avoided them by taking the form of a bull, then disappeared into the ground and reappeared in five places. The Pandavas built a temple at each one.
The Five Kedars
Kedarnath: The hump of the bull appeared here. It is the most famous of the five and involves a long, steady climb of around 16 km from Gaurikund. Ponies and palkis are available if needed.
Tungnath: Where the arms appeared, and the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek from Chopta is short but steep in places. Many trekkers continue to Chandrashila for wide Himalayan views.
Rudranath: The face of Shiva is worshipped here. It is the toughest of the five, with long distances, steep sections and very few facilities.
Madhyamaheshwar: The navel is worshipped here. This is a proper multi-day trek through villages, forest and open ridges, starting from Ransi.
Kalpeshwar: The matted hair appeared here. It is the easiest of the five, needing only a short walk from Urgam, and it stays open through the year.
Sample Panch Kedar Trek Itinerary
Most groups take around 12 to 16 days. A typical plan looks like this:
- Day 1: Arrive in Haridwar or Rishikesh, drive to Guptkashi
- Day 2: Drive to Gaurikund and trek to Kedarnath
- Day 3: Darshan, trek down, drive towards Ransi
- Days 4 to 5: Trek to Madhyamaheshwar and back
- Day 6: Drive to Chopta
- Day 7: Tungnath and Chandrashila, return to Chopta
- Days 8 to 10: Rudranath trek via Sagar village, then return
- Day 11: Visit Kalpeshwar
- Day 12: Drive back to Rishikesh or Haridwar
Routes can be reversed, and extra buffer days are wise because landslides and rain can change plans quickly.
How Difficult Is the Panch Kedar Trek?
Overall it is moderate to difficult. No single day is technically hard, but the total effort adds up. Beginners with decent fitness can manage it if they prepare four to six weeks in advance with brisk walking, stair climbing and a few practice hikes with a loaded backpack. Rudranath and Madhyamaheshwar need the most stamina, while Kalpeshwar and Tungnath are friendlier for first-timers.
Best Time for the Panch Kedar Trek
The two comfortable windows are May to June and September to October.
- May to June: Clear weather and temples open, though trails can be crowded.
- July to August: Monsoon brings landslides and slippery trails, so it is usually avoided.
- September to October: Crisp air, sharp mountain views and fewer crowds.
- Winter: Snow closes the high shrines, and only Kalpeshwar stays open.
Temple opening and closing dates change every year, so always check the latest dates before booking.
How to Reach from Gujarat
The usual gateways are Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. Trains connect Gujarat with Haridwar and Rishikesh, and Dehradun has an airport with connecting flights. From Rishikesh, Guptkashi is roughly 8 to 9 hours by road. Check current train and flight schedules before you book.

Permits and Safety
Kedarnath requires yatra registration through the official Uttarakhand portal, and some routes pass through the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, so forest rules may apply. Mobile networks are patchy after the road ends, so share your itinerary with family and carry some cash. Go slowly, drink plenty of water and never ignore headaches, nausea or breathlessness.
