kedarnath yatra

There’s a moment on the Kedarnath trek  somewhere past Linchauli, when the trees thin out and the air turns thin and sharp  when most pilgrims stop talking. The valley opens up, the Chorabari glacier peeks over the ridge, and the temple itself finally comes into view, sitting quietly against a wall of snow-capped peaks. It’s the kind of sight that makes the aching legs and the early morning start feel completely worth it.

If you’re planning to make this journey, this guide covers everything you actually need to know  no fluff, just the practical details that matter.

What is the Kedarnath Yatra?

Kedarnath Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva and forms a key part of the Char Dham Yatra, alongside Yamunotri, Gangotri, and Badrinath. Perched at an altitude of 3,583 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, the temple is only accessible for a few months each year  the rest of the time, it’s buried under snow, and the deity is moved to Ukhimath for worship.

Every year, lakhs of devotees make the trip, and the pilgrimage is as much about the physical journey as it is about the spiritual one.

Kedarnath Temple Opening Date 2026

The temple traditionally opens on Akshaya Tritiya, with the exact date announced during Mahashivratri each year. For 2026, Kedarnath Dham is set to open on 22nd April at 8:00 AM, following the customary Vedic rituals. The temple usually stays open until around October or November, depending on weather conditions, before closing again for winter.

If you’re planning your trip, keep in mind that the temple opening is a major event in itself  expect large crowds and full accommodation in Kedarnath and nearby towns during the first couple of weeks.

Registration: The One Step You Cannot Skip

This is the part people underestimate the most. Registration is mandatory for every pilgrim heading to Kedarnath, and without a valid pass, you won’t be allowed past the checkpoints on the route.

Here’s how it works:

  • Registration opens in early March each year through the official Uttarakhand government portal, registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in
  • You’ll need a mobile number for OTP verification, a government ID (Aadhaar, passport, or driving license), and a passport-size photo
  • Once registered, you’ll get a QR-coded pass  carry both a printed copy and a digital copy, since it’s checked multiple times along the route
  • Helicopter bookings also require a valid yatra registration number, so don’t skip this step even if you’re flying in

A quick tip: the portal gets heavy traffic right after the opening date is announced and during peak booking weeks. Registering early in the morning, before office hours, tends to go a lot smoother than trying during the day.

How to Reach Kedarnath: The Complete Route

The journey to Kedarnath happens in stages, and most pilgrims break it up over several days rather than rushing it.

Typical route: Haridwar / Rishikesh → Guptkashi → Sonprayag → Gaurikund → Kedarnath

From Gaurikund, the road ends and the trek begins  roughly 16 to 18 km, climbing steadily through changing terrain, from forest cover in the lower stretches to bare, rocky, alpine landscape near the top.

Getting to Gaurikund:

  • By air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, from where you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Gaurikund (roughly 200+ km)
  • By rail: Rishikesh and Haridwar are the closest major railheads
  • By road: Regular buses and shared taxis run from Rishikesh and Haridwar through Rudraprayag and Guptkashi to Sonprayag, with a short local transfer to Gaurikund

From Gaurikund to Kedarnath, you have three options:

  • Trek on foot  the traditional and most affordable option, taking most people 7 to 9 hours
  • Helicopter services  operated by licensed aviation companies, ideal for elderly pilgrims or those short on time (registration is still required)
  • Palki, ponies, or pithoo for those who want assistance without flying, available for hire near Gaurikund

Best Time to Visit

Timing your trip well makes a real difference to both comfort and safety.

  • May–June: Pleasant weather but the busiest period, with heavy crowds right after the temple opens
  • July–August: Best avoided  this is peak monsoon season, with a real risk of landslides and road closures along the mountain routes
  • September–October: Often considered the sweet spot  cooler weather, thinner crowds, and generally more stable conditions before the winter closure

Fitness and Health Considerations

The trek isn’t technically difficult, but the altitude and the steady climb catch a lot of people off guard. A few things worth knowing:

  • Pilgrims above 50, or with existing medical conditions, are often advised to get a basic fitness check before attempting the trek
  • Acclimatize where possible  don’t rush the ascent, especially in the final stretch
  • Carry warm layers regardless of the season; temperatures near the temple drop sharply, even in summer
  • Basic medical aid posts are available along the route, but carrying your own essentials (medication, water, energy snacks) is a good habit

Where to Stay

Accommodation ranges from basic dharamshalas and guesthouses to more comfortable hotels, mostly concentrated in Guptkashi, Sonprayag, and Gaurikund, with limited options directly in Kedarnath itself. During peak season, rooms fill up fast, so booking in advance  rather than hoping to find something on arrival  is the safer bet.

A Few Practical Tips Before You Go

  • Book your stay and, if needed, helicopter tickets well in advance, especially for travel close to the opening date
  • Keep both digital and printed copies of every document  registration pass, ID, and bookings
  • Avoid third-party websites charging a “registration fee”  the official process is free
  • Pack layers, a good pair of trekking shoes, a rain cover, and a reusable water bottle
  • Respect local customs and the pace of the mountains  this is as much a spiritual journey as a physical one

Final Thoughts

The Kedarnath Yatra isn’t just a trip to check off a list  it’s a journey that rewards patience and preparation. Getting the practical details right  registration, timing, route, and fitness  means you get to actually be present for the part that matters: standing in front of that ancient temple, surrounded by mountains, with the whole trip finally making sense.
